Cargele Masso (Ph.D.)’s research activities are mainly in quality control and efficacy assessment of fertilizers and supplements, soil fertility management including evidence-based fertilizer and soil amendment recommendations. Since 2014 and until recently, he was the Africa Regional Director of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI). Since 2018, he is coordinator the East Africa Demonstration Site of the International Nitrogen Management System (INMS). Also, since 2016 he is the Executive Secretary of the Africa Soil Science Society. He has been involved in CocoaSoils since 2018.
Before joining IITA, he had worked in Canada as a regulatory officer in the Fertilizer Section of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and post-doctoral fellow at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (soil fertility). Dr. Masso holds a Ph.D. in Soil and Environmental Science (Université Laval in Québec, Canada); an M.Sc. in Environmental Science (Université de Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada); and an M.Sc. and a B.Sc. in soil chemistry and plant nutrition from the Zhejiang (Agriculture) University in Hangzhou (China). He also holds a Certificate in Project Management (Université du Québec en Outaouais, Canada).
